When you’re deciding who to build with, the finished home is only part of the story.
For our client Chris, this project was about creating a rural holiday retreat for his family in the Macedon Ranges. Surrounded by open paddocks and sweeping views, the site provided the perfect setting for a prefab modular home designed to sit comfortably within the landscape while responding to the local climate.
It was important that the home not only worked practically for the block, but also captured the beauty of its surroundings through a considered layout and strong connection to the outdoors. The result is a home that feels calm, comfortable and perfectly at home in its environment.
Just as significant as the finished result, however, was Chris’ experience building with Anchor Homes. From the early planning stages through to delivery and post-build support, his reflections speak to the trust, communication and follow-through that made the process such a positive one.

“Anchor are fantastic… they’ve got great processes, great people, and they deliver… I’m a big believer in modular, and they do it very well.” - Chris, Macedon Ranges Project
For anyone weighing up who to build with, Chris’s story offers more than a look at a beautiful completed project. It gives a genuine insight into the care, professionalism, and support that come with choosing Anchor Homes.
The Story Behind This Modular Home Design
Design: Flinders 15 • Bed: 3 • Bath: 2 • Modules: 2 • Area: 138.8sqm
With their primary residence in Melbourne, Chris and his wife wanted a comfortable rural retreat they could escape to regularly — somewhere practical, low-maintenance and easy to enjoy with family.
The setting also played a major role in shaping the brief. The home sits in the middle of an open paddock with expansive rural views, but also full exposure to the elements. The region’s climate can be demanding, with very cold winters, hot summers and strong winds across the property, so it was important to create a home that would feel comfortable and perform well year-round.
The site also came with practical challenges. In wetter months, parts of the land can become difficult to access, and with the home positioned well into the block, delivery and construction needed to be carefully considered. Chris was drawn to modular building because it offered a more efficient approach for a rural site, with less disruption to the land and a faster path to completion.
“We selected Anchor because of the modular approach to building. It’s a light footprint on the land… very little waste.” - Chris, Macedon Ranges Project Client
After exploring a number of options, Anchor Homes stood out for both the modular approach and the confidence our team gave him throughout the journey. Chris appreciated having a builder who could guide the process clearly and help deliver a home that responded to the site, the climate and the lifestyle they wanted to create.
Home Exterior Design
One of the defining features of this project is its L-shaped form, based on our Flinders 15 design.
This configuration works especially well on a rural site, helping the home open out to the landscape from multiple angles while also creating a sense of shelter and enclosure. In exposed settings, an L-shaped footprint can improve zoning, provide protection from prevailing winds and establish a more usable relationship between indoor and outdoor living areas.
The home features our Modern Gable façade, a design influenced by Scandinavian architecture and known for its clean lines, refined detailing and strong roof forms. The façade emphasises the geometry of the building and creates a modern barn-style aesthetic that feels particularly at home in expansive country settings. Against the open paddock backdrop, the result is both striking and understated.
A standout element is the large feature gable window in the master bedroom. Designed to maximise natural light while creating a bold architectural statement, this window has become one of the client’s favourite features in the entire home. “I lie in bed and look at all the stars,” Chris says. “Sometimes the moon keeps me awake at night. It’s just wonderful looking out over the paddocks.” It’s a detail that not only elevates the façade, but also enhances the everyday experience of living in the home.
Another thoughtful upgrade was the addition of aluminium window shrouds, which give the exterior a more articulated and architecturally refined feel. Beyond aesthetics, they also help frame selected outlooks across the property.
For the external cladding, Weathertex Weathergroove was selected in Colorbond Bluegum, paired with a Colorbond steel roof. It’s a material palette that feels contemporary yet grounded in the natural environment.
Floorplan & Design
The home is based on the Flinders 15, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom design comprising two modules across 138.8sqm.
The floorplan remained largely true to the original design, with the main modification being expanded merbau decking to enhance outdoor living. Wrapping around the home, the decking extends the liveable footprint and strengthens the connection between the interior and the surrounding rural landscape.
A key strength of the design is its L-shaped footprint, which allows the home to respond beautifully to the site by capturing views from multiple angles while creating a stronger sense of connection to the landscape. It also provides effective zoning between shared and private spaces, making it especially well suited to a holiday home setting.
At the heart of the home is the open-plan living, dining and kitchen zone, which flows directly onto the full-length deck. This creates a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and gives the central living area an even greater sense of openness and scale.
The bedrooms are positioned in a separate wing, creating a sense of privacy and retreat away from the main living zone. The master suite includes an ensuite and walk-in robe, while the additional bedrooms and bathroom offer flexibility for visiting family. Altogether, the Flinders 15 delivers a well-balanced floorplan that combines openness, comfort and practicality.
The Anchor Homes Building Experience
While the finished home speaks for itself, a major part of this project story is the building journey behind it.
Chris wanted to work with a company that felt stable, transparent and capable of delivering on its promises. “It was very important to me to ensure that we were dealing with a reputable company that we knew would be with us on the journey,” he says.
That support extended from the earliest stages of design through to completion and aftercare. “The building journey was seamless,” Chris says, “and very well communicated — all the steps, all the processes.” He also appreciated the way our team collaborated with him on ideas, helping him weigh up different options while keeping the overall design outcome front of mind. Rather than changing the floorplan for the sake of it, the process helped confirm that the original design was already a strong match for the site and lifestyle.
For those considering building a modular home with Anchor Homes, Chris’ perspective is a powerful one. “Anchor have got great people, very good processes and deliver a great product — and look after you at the end of that product.”
That combination of design expertise, construction quality and genuine customer care is exactly what we bring to every project at Anchor Homes.
